Sugar Industry in Pakistan
Pakistan ranks sixth in the world in sugar production. Sugar industry in Pakistan is the second largest agro based industry besides textiles. There are 85 sugar mills with a capacity to produce 7 million tons of sugar annually provided commensurate sugarcane is available. Present annual sugar consumption of the country is estimated to be around 4.8 million tons valued at US$ 2.4 billion.
Sugarcane is one of the major crops in Pakistan cultivated over an area of around 1.27 million hectares. Sugarcane farming and sugar manufacturing contribute significantly to the national exchequer with 1.9% share in GDP. The sugar sector provides direct and indirect employment to about 10 million people particularly in the rural areas of the country.
Sugar industry has a potential to export sugar in coming years.
